Founder’s Story

The first John Ryan

Ryan Financial Group (RFG) was founded in 1947 by John R. Ryan Sr., in Hibbing, MN. At the time, just after WWII, the focus was on helping families with financial security, no matter what came their way, through life insurance and disability income insurance.


Right from the beginning, the focus was on building long-term relationships and solving — not selling. John Sr. never wanted to be seen as just an “insurance guy” but instead as a partner in his clients’ journey to financial security.

Second generation, the next John Ryan

Taking over his father’s business, John “Jack” Ryan, carried on his father’s legacy while adapting to new financial offerings and marketplace shifts.


Insurance was no longer the only option, so in addition to becoming a Chartered Life Underwriter, Jack also became a Chartered Financial Consultant and Certified Financial Planner.


Under Jack’s leadership, the firm grew and expanded their areas of specialization while never losing sight of the founding principle: “to practice ethically and in the best interest of the good people we serve.”


Jack still plays a role in RFG by serving as chairperson.

Third generation, the current John Ryan

John is the third generation to lead RFG. He didn’t start in the family business, though. He worked for one of the nation’s leading retirement providers in a variety of roles before moving back to MN to open an RFG office in the Twin Cities.


In 2016, RFG brought on Greg Stalsberg as a partner and Chief Investment Officer. Shortly after Greg took over the Twin Cities office, and John and his family moved back North to manage the firm’s Hibbing office.


Together, John and Greg are leading the company forward to its next phase of growth.
